Hardangerfjord runs 179 kilometres inland from the open Atlantic, making it the second-longest fjord in Norway and the fourth-longest on earth. Rosendal sits near its southern shoulder, beneath ice.
The village owes its name to a rose garden and its fame to a marriage. In 1658 Karen Mowat, said to be the wealthiest heiress in Norway, wed the Danish nobleman Ludvig Rosenkrantz. Her dowry included the Hatteberg estate. Construction of the manor began in 1665. In 1678 the Danish crown elevated the property to a barony — Baroniet Rosendal, the smallest baronial estate in Scandinavia and the only one Norway ever held. The title lapsed under the nobility law of 1821. The house did not. It passed to the University of Oslo in 1927 and has been open to the public since.
